Q&A: What Should I Major In?
Question by Iknowimhotand: What Should I Major In?
What Should I Major In?
OK, so here are a few of the majors I have considered
-psychiatrist
-pediatrician
-pharmacist
-social worker
-marketing
-business management
-construction worker
-athletic trainer
-fitness instructor
-lawyer
-high school teacher (history)/football coach
-middle school teacher (history)/football coach
-pastor
-professor of history or philosophy
-politician
-biochemist
-physician’s assistant
-biologist
-clinical psychologist
-school counselor
-career counselor
I have seriously considered all of these career paths. I want to choose a major that can get me to one of them, but I cannot decide what I want to do with my life. I understand that I am not alone, but it sure would make college easier if I knew my direction. Honestly, I do not really appreciate math and science too much. However, I am good at it when I apply myself. I seriously consider those fields, because I want a career that can support a family someday. Same thing with business. I am not interested in it at all, but it has potential to provide a meaningful career if I follow through with it.
If my future career wasn’t in the picture, these are the areas I would love to study–the areas I would excel in, and already do excel in:
-history (passion)
-philosophy (don’t know to many high school students who absolutely love the topic)
-english
-psychology
Basically, I am a liberal arts guy. The problem is that I hear liberal arts majors are not really looked for in today’s economy. Things could change over the next 4-6 years.
If I had to, I could manage getting good grades in math and science, but look at what I already excel in:
-english = 4.0
-social studies = 4.0
-science = 3.5
-math = 2.0 (not what I excel in; albeit, I took advanced classes and did not have a proper calculator for two years, because we were to poor to afford one)
So I excel in liberal arts classes, and I love to think about the deeper issues in the world. I love discussing those issues. I love writing about them. I am also a proven leader. I was captain of the football team my junior and senior season. I was also elected homecoming king (which, if you ask anyone who voted probably has to do more with my leadership in the classroom and on the field than my social status or popularity).
Besides football, history, and deep thinking, I don’t have any other strong passions. I do enjoy writing, but would never pursue journalism as a career, as has been suggested.
Also, I want a career that will directly help people. I understand that it might sound selfish that I want a high paying job. However, I guarantee that if I did not plan on having a family, my career choice would be much easier. I have grown up in a very poor family, and I know how hard it is to constantly maintain a happy life. I also do not want to be like my father (whom I greatly respect) who is going on 50 and still works grueling 14 hour work days as a floor installer. I want a well paying job to support my future family, but I also would be most happy in a setting where I helped people.
I am a high achiever. I am not worried about if I will excel. I am worried about my passions transferring into a well-paying career to support a family. I do not want to hate my job. I find that people are most successful if they follow their passions. I do not know how to go about doing that, though.
I am definitely willing to study for more than 4 years. My undergraduate schooling is completely paid with scholarships and grants. In fact, I might have some left over.

First of all, do what will make you happy!! If you go into a career field that pays well but isn’t really what you enjoy doing, then you will be miserable. Just think…whatever career you choose better be something you like, for you will be doing it for a long time.
When you say you dislike math and biology, then I would recommend you crossing off biologist, physician’s assistant, biochemist, and the other similar medical occupations off your list. These careers are chock full of biology. You may get a degree in any of these fields, only to decide later that it was not what you wanted.
Teaching, psychology, social work, and career/school counselor are all good professions that would allow you to help others, but do not offer the highest salaries.
Just as a suggestion…if you really like philosophy, go ahead and get a degree in it. A philosophy major would prepare you well for law school. And lawyers easily make a six figure salary.
But I do not want to tell you exactly what to do ~ for that is ultimately up to you!
Best of luck.

Q&A: I need a life coach! Someone help me figure out the best thing to do, please?
Question by humminax3: I need a life coach! Someone help me figure out the best thing to do, please?
Here’s what you have to work with:
My husband is on disablity for a rare illness. My oldest daughter is Medically Fragile. Her condition requires that we keep our income within a certain range in order to qualify for insurance that will actually cover her. I am trying to start my own business as a bookkeeper/QuickBooks ProAdvisor. I have a regular 3/4 time job now and work clients around it. Once I have enough clients I would quit my job. In addition to my own business, I want to attend college and get an Accounting Degree. What I need to know is if you think that is the best thing for me to do
I could find another job full time making 13/hr and support my family, but never buy a house. I could go to school but I would struggle with family, clients and school not to mention homework.
A note about my daughter’s insurance. I have to either qualify for a state insurance program or find a company that has really AWESOME insurance becz most prvt ins won’t cover her
Any ideas???
Most insurance companies will take a pre-existing condition however they would charge us an arm and a leg for coverage and then exclude needed items such as durable medical supplies. That is just not do-able.
I cannot get private insurance for her at all. No insurance company would take her, and even if they did there would be a one year wait and then again with the arm and a leg thing.
Hope that helps!

I am just curious why most insurance companies won’t cover her…is it because it is a pre-existing condition or the condition itself is not insurable?

Hi. I am a unemployed General Manager with 20 years exp. I have been out of work for 2 years now. While coaching my son and his little league team I came up with a idea for a web-site and store that will eventually be known in most households especially amongst families that enjoy sports and outdoor activity…..I have contacted Major League Baseball but i am so excited i cannot wait….can anyone advise me on how I can get this started or who may be interested in being part of this? I have purchased the domain name and have started to make a web-site on Weebly but I’m not very good….and this is too darn slow. cash is tight so throwing money at it isn’t an option!

Contact the SBA. They can point you towards all types of resources. Despite what you might see on commercials on the web there are really no grant programs for small business. For a business loan you’re going to need to create a business entity and create a business plan. A bank is also going to want to see how much equity you have invested. It’s going to be pretty tough to find loans for this type of thing.
